Fotica George passed away peacefully at her home in Scottsdale on Wednesday, March 3 at the age of 97, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Brusa, Asia Minor on August 15, 1912.
Mrs. George was preceded in death by her husband James George, parents, Thelma and William Christ, and her brother Paul Christ. She is survived by her brother Gus Christ, her children James (the late Elsie) George, Jr., Thelma (Gordon) Steers, Marguerita (Billy) Yates, grandchildren Vicky Flick, James (Mandy) George III, Mark George, Karen (Rayes) Tafoya, Katherine Yates, and nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
As refugees of the Greco-Turkish war, Fotica’s family moved to the United States where her two brothers were born. On May 8, 1932, she married James George in Ann Arbor Michigan, where they resided until retiring to Scottsdale, AZ in 1970.
Fotica proudly obtained her US citizenship in 1938. While her brothers served in the military during World War II, she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant, assembling heaters for B-24 bombers. She was proud of her Greek heritage and was very active in the Greek Orthodox church. She was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, GAPA, and the Daughters of Penelope.
The family sincerely thanks Hospice of the Valley for their support and care during Fotica’s last days, and especially wishes to thank grandchildren Karen and Ray Tafoya for their loving care over the past nine months. A visitation will take place from 6 to 8 pm Friday March 5th at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale. Reverend Fathers Andrew Barakos and William Christ will officiate at funeral services at 12 noon on Saturday, March 6th at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 8202 E. Cactus Rd., Scottsdale AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Iconography Fund at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor MI, or to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Scottsdale AZ.
