July 24, 1937 ~ November 26, 2018 (age 81)
SCOTTSDALE – Charles “Chuck” Merdich, 81, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully on Monday, November 26, 2018 with his family by his side. Chuck was born on July 24, 1937 to Charles and Mary Merdich at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the eldest of two children and graduated from Cheney High School in 1955. Subsequently, he attended Youngstown State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. During his college years, he met and married his sweetheart, Monica on September, 1960 and shared 58 years of marriage. Chuck was ROTC in college and following graduation went into the Army’s 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas in 1961. Chuck and Monica welcomed two sons during this time; Michael born July 1961 and Jeff born June 1963. While in the “The Big Red One”, Chuck focused on field artillery, progressed to 1st Lieutenant and was honorably discharged in 1963. Following the military, Chuck worked as an engineer at Borg Warner and TRW in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1978, Chuck was hired by Garrett Airesearch Aviation as a Sales Engineer and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he worked until his retirement in 1999. During this time, Chuck traveled as part of the job and especially enjoyed his time in Hong Kong China, Singapore Malaysia, Paris France, England and Scotland. Chuck enjoyed playing baseball, flag football, and basketball but, his lifelong sports were dedicated to bowling and golf. In bowling, he had numerous 700 series games and rolled a perfect 300 game which is a rare feat. In golf, he was an active member at Mesa Country Club, had 5 hole-in-ones across the country and shot his age at 74. Chuck always looked forward to his golf trips with his buddies to places like San Diego and Palm Springs, California. Chuck was very proud of his grandchildren, watching all their sporting and school events and providing opportunities for them to learn and love the game of golf. Chuck is survived by his wife Monica, sons Michael of Youngstown, Ohio and Jeff (and wife Karen) of Tempe, Arizona and three grandchildren, Jake, Colton and Garrett. Chuck will be remembered for his love and devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren.
