Kooi, Clarence 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9, 2019 of natural causes at Westminster Village in Scottsdale, Arizona. Most beloved and respected by family and friends, Clarence was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1922, graduated from Calvin College, and proudly served in the United States Army in World War II. Clarence was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty and during their 67 years of marriage they raised daughters Jana Kooi, Jane (James) Kooi Markoski and Joan (Michael) Mentink. In addition to his daughters, Clarence is also survived by grandchildren Maxwell (Patrice) Markoski, Melissa (Raymond) Fales and Joshua Mentink; and great-grandchildren Emma Fales and Abigail Fales. He also leaves behind many friends at Valley Presbyterian and Westminster Village, particularly his dear friend John Harris.
Clarence was the founder and former owner of Kooi Industrial Painting, Inc. and was highly respected for his honesty and integrity in business and his support of the communities in which he lived.
Clarence served on many boards and commissions, including the Bethany Christian Home and Grand Rapids Christian School Board, for which he received numerous honors and awards for his service and as a Founding Member of Grand Valley State University. Clarence built many friendships from those affiliations and from his years as a business owner in Grand Rapids. His was a life well lived, contributing more to family, friends and community than he ever asked in return.
A memorial service and celebration of Clarence’s life will be held on June 3, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Valley Presbyterian Church Chapel, 6947 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Westminster Village Foundation, 12000 N. 90th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85260 or the Christian Rest Home, 1000 Edison Ave., NW Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
