Don Wales Culwell, 82, passed away peacefully at home with family on May 17, 2019 in Payson, AZ.
Don was born in Norman, OK on February 14, 1937. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with his bachelors degree in 1959 and with his medical degree in 1962. Don was dual board certified in pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. In addition to being dual certified, Don was a forerunner of neonatal medicine.
Don enjoyed being outdoors and shooting his guns. He was a connoisseur of music and art and an admirer of Native American and western culture. Don often volunteered his services as a doctor to the underserved population. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1955 to 1963.
Don is survived by his fiancee, Susan Peddie, his sister Carolyn Rickenbrode, his children Cindi Bennett, April Culwell, Amber Culwell, Christin Hammack, Brad Hammack and Anne Schmadl, his grandchildren Elle Ferrera, Emmi Ferrera, Cody Morgan and Landri Morgan.
Celebration of Don’s life will be held at Messinger Funeral Home in Payson, AZ, in the chapel, on Saturday, May 25 at 11:00am.
Flowers will be graciously accepted at the funeral home, or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s name to the Payson Humane Society.
