Our beloved Don Hansen, 72, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2018 in Mesa, Arizona, after a brief illness. Don was born in El Paso, Texas, to Nancy and Donald Hansen, Sr., on January 11, 1946. His fondest memories of childhood were from his years in Barrington, Illinois. After graduating from East Carolina University, NC, Don moved his family to Mesa, Arizona, where he resided for over 40 years. Don’s career encompassed both social work and business, yet his true calling was teaching. An outstanding athlete himself, Don was an amazing coach of baseball and football for youngsters and adults. He especially liked helping alongside his son who coached a school softball team. In later years after earning a master’s degree, Don became a devoted special education teacher, teaching alongside his daughter at Dobson High School. Ball players, students, and their parents loved him. Since retiring from teaching, Don divided his time between Mesa and the ponderosa pine forests of Munds Park in northern Arizona. Throughout his life, he enjoyed attending church and volunteering in church projects. In 2017, Don celebrated the publication of Colorful Tales: The Memoirs of Buz the Bear, his short stories for children inspired by scriptural teachings. People of all ages appreciated Don’s gentle strength, his openness, his intelligence, his humor, and his unfailing faith. After first meeting Don, someone typically would place a hand on Don’s shoulder as he sat in his favorite scooter. Those who knew him well and those who had just met him were drawn to Don’s lifelong demonstration of unconditional love, palpable in word and in action. Don is survived by his life partner Irena, daughter Tiffany, son Eric and his wife Ana, grandson Jaidon, granddaughter Lindsay, three great grandchildren, sister Debbie, brother Scott, niece Stephanie and her family, and many cousins. A viewing will take place at 5:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 30, at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd., Scottsdale, AZ. Casual attire requested. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don’s name may be made to Real Options Pregnancy Medical Clinics, 1671 The Alameda, Suite 101, San Jose, CA 95126.
