Jim Wellington, 87, of Scottsdale, Arizona died on November 20, 2018. Jim was born on April 23, 1931 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. His childhood was spent in West Burlington, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. Jim was preceded in death by his father Ralph (Beno) Wellington, Mother Helen, his beloved sister, Shirley Lou (Speck) and Son Michael John. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Alice Anne, who was the love of his life, daughters Joye (Michael) Foti, Jaimie Jeannette (Shamy) and Grandchildren, Nicholas Shamy, Hannah, Glynn, Mackenzie Foti, Sarah Foti and Great-Grandson, Eli Shamy. Other survivors who Jim loved dearly were nieces Jody (Jim) Wood, Sue (Steve) Frost, Jonna (Glenn) Baker and their children and grandchildren. On Jim's marriage to Anne he was blessed to be welcomed into Anne's family of daughters Diane (Greg) Hood-Murphy, Julie (Tony) Mackey, sons Bryan (Keiko) Hesse, Scott (Lisa) Hesse and their children and grandchildren.
Jim served in the United States Air Force from 1951 through 1953. After being honorably discharged he attended and later graduated from Arizona State University in 1956. He then went to work for Arizona Public Service in different Human Resource management positions. It was a career he loved because of the existing corporate culture and the outstanding individuals who were also employed there. He retired in 1991. He then worked for Kids Voting, Drake, Beam, Morin a New York management consulting firm, Maricopa County Human Resources, and the Wellness firm of Piotti, Johannsen, Robinson, and Roe.
Jim had two avocations he loved dearly-reading and following baseball at all levels, and volunteering for non-profit agencies and community organizations which included Chairman, Los Arcos Multi-Facility District Board, Chairman Recording For the Blind & Dyslexic Board of Directors, Scottsdale Friends of the Library Board of Directors, Member Scottsdale School Board 1971-1975, President, Arizona School Boards Association, 1975, President, Arizona Academic Decathlon Association, Co-Chairman, Scottsdale Citizen Bond committee, 1983, member, Scottsdale Personnel Board, 1979-1984, Commissioner, Scottsdale Planning and Zoning 1984-1986, Member, Maricopa Community College Foundation Board of Directors 1987-1989, Member, Member ASU Advanced Public Executive Program Advisory Board, President Phoenix Personnel Management Association (1985), Chairman, ASU Center For Executive Development, Chairman, State of Arizona American Legion Baseball program,
Volunteer and member of the Desert Foothill Library, Member Carefree Kiwanis organization. His most treasured volunteer efforts was with the Hospice of the Valley organization where he served on the Speakers Bureau for over 10 years. This organization has a marvelous mission to help others in the most desperate of needs and does so consistently with compassion, love, and integrity. A memorial service will be held in Jim’s honor on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 1:00pm at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow.
