Robert (Bob) John Vairo

September 27, 1930 ~ December 1, 2018 (age 88)

Bob Vairo, age 88, passed away peacefully on December 1st, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 27th, 1930 to Antoinetta and John Vairo. He spent his childhood in Brooklyn and was married to Carol in 1951. He served in the Marine Corps in Korea during that conflict. He moved to New Jersey in 1964 and was divorced in 1978. Bob and Inge were married in 1979 and last lived in Bernardsville, New Jersey before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1994 where they built a home in the Desert Highlands Golf Club. Bob was active in the community, serving on the club's board of directors from 1996 to 2001 and served as president for three of those years. Bob was very active as president of the Coalition of Pinnacle Peak, which he founded in 1997 and was involved in the politics of the city. His major focus was keeping North Scottsdale residential while preserving the desert for all to enjoy. Bob enjoyed tennis and golf. He also took up painting and wrote several books as well in his later years. Bob displayed a vigor and vitality beyond his age. He was admired by those who knew him and was a devoted husband of Inge for 39 years. A man for all seasons, he exceeded in every endeavor with compassion, excellence, loyalty and as a wise counsel. He served as chairman of the American Insurance Association, Insurance Services Office and Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters. Bob was elected to two terms as a councilman and later president of the Lincoln Park, New Jersey City Council. He retired in 1992 as the chairman and CEO of Crum & Forster, a national insurance company owned by Xerox at that time. Bob is survived by his wife Inge; two sons, Robert and Greg; and sister Marie. Memorial Mass Wednesday, December 12 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, 36811 N Pima Rd in Carefree, AZ.  Reception to follow mass at Desert Highlands Golf Club 10040 E Happy Valley Rd in Scottsdale.  Memorials preferred to Lovin Touch Assisted Living. 4130 W Northern Ave Phoenix, AZ 85051
