Obituary

Rosemary (Sautner) LaRue passed away after a determined struggle with severe health problems at age 83 on July 11, 2019, at Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, AZ. Rosemary was the daughter of the late John W. Sautner and June (Dodge) Sautner. Her older sister, Jacqueline, also preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert; her children, Beth, Carrie and Stephen, and daughter-in-law Lori; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; niece Rochelle Neyland; sister-in-law Nancy Mahr; cousins Donna, Teri, Jane and Michelle, and many friends gathered through her lifetime of open and charitable love.  Rosemary was born in San Pedro, CA. She graduated from San Pedro High School where she excelled in athletics and dramatics. She then attended Pasadena City College and began her lifelong educational career as a part-time drama instructor of elementary schoolchildren. While raising her family and helping to put her children through college, she earned her Master of Library Science degree (magna cum laude) and became Head Librarian at Kalamazoo (MI) Central High School, from which she retired, disabled by rheumatoid arthritis, in 1995. Rosemary and Bob moved to the Southwest in 1996, eventually settling in Fountain Hills, AZ.

These are the bricks and mortar of Rosemary’s external life. As with most structures, however elegantly designed, it merely provides shelter for the more important life that thrives within. Rosemary’s life embodied much: the touch of her babies, the flutter of butterfly wings, the songs of small birds, the secret messages of trees and flowers, the communing spirit with dogs, cats and horses, the benevolence of still, dark waters of a lake at morning, red rock canyons and Pacific coves, and the clear voice of music—a little Mozart or Ella or Paul Desmond—or a dance! When she danced she was Cracklin’ Rosie, arthritis be damned! And there was more—is more—for Rosemary knew only the infinite horizons of her loving heart.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are private. Remembrances in Rosemary’s name may be made to Ghost Ranch, Abiqui, NM, or Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix.
