William Edward “Bill” McCandless, 65, died peacefully at his home in Carefree, Arizona on December 30, 2018 surrounded by his family. Bill was born November 26, 1953 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Edna Edmondson and Henry McCandless. Bill was a graduate of University of Texas at Dallas and received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He was an owner of Material Flow Systems, Inc. an industrial automation firm which developed a cutting-edge application of material handling technology at the time he founded it in the 1980’s. Bill moved to Scottsdale, Arizona with his family in 1993. His three children Danielle Varns (Stephen), Courtney McCandless and Clint McCandless affectionately called him “Faja” and he had nicknames for “JoJo” “Biscuit” and “Pal.” He loved to ride his motorcycle, hike, ski (where he notoriously always wore jeans on the slopes), travel, listen to music, and was a “connector” of people and friends. In recent years he lived in Carefree where he was an active board member of his homeowner’s association where his ability to “fix anything” was celebrated. He was a person who lived spontaneously, in the moment and in person, and as such had no need for social media accounts. He was generous, fun loving and always there for his family and friends. Bill is survived by his wife Phyllis Welch (his high school sweetheart who he reconnected with 10 years ago), his children Danielle, Courtney and Clint, his sister Patty McCandless of Dallas, Texas, his brother Morgan McCandless of St. Louis, Missouri, and his children’s mother Kimberly Stamatelos of West Des Moines, Iowa (as well as Popples, his beloved 14-year-old dog) . A member of Assumption Greek Orthodox church since 1995, Bill was very active in early efforts to build the beautiful Byzantine church that stands there today. A Celebration of life will be held on February 9th from 12noon to 2pm at The Village at Carefree Clubhouse, 36601 N Mule Train Rd, Carefree AZ 85377, 12 noon to 2 .
A Memorial Service will be held on February 10th from 10am to 12noon following the lethargy service at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 8202 E Cactus Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.
