A Richard Markson passed away on Tuesday July 13, 2021 from natural causes in Scottsdale, AZ.
Richard Markson was born in New York, NY to Alfred and Marie Markson on January 4, 1932. His family moved to Pittsburgh, PA when he was a child. He graduated from Mt Lebanon high school in 1949 and then Bucknell University in 1953. Upon college graduation, Richard joined the United States Navy as a lieutenant and served for 4 years.
After service, he returned to Pittsburgh where he met S. Denise Edwards. They married on December 1st 1961 at Christ Methodist Church in Bethel Park, PA. For almost 50 years, they were devoted to each other and, together, they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael.
Richard spent his career in the financial services/banking business. He had a long and illustrious career with Pittsburgh National Bank (later PNC) as a senior member of the trust department. His colleagues knew him as a “smart investment guy whose gruff exterior could sometimes disguise his bright intellect” and “a legend”. Richard thoroughly enjoyed intellectual jousting.
Richard enjoyed sports his entire life. As a young man, he played football and baseball. As an adult, he sailed and played paddle tennis. Throughout his adult life and well into his retirement, he played golf. His golf swing perplexed instructors but was uniquely his own. He loved the beach and spending time with family and friends. Throughout his life, Richard loved his many dogs. His devoted companion dog Dixie survives him.
Richard and his wife Denise retired to Hilton Head, SC. But retirement did not go as they had planned. Denise developed lewy body dementia and he became her devoted care giver for over a decade. He was her passionate advocate and cared for her full time until she succumbed in 2009.
In 2010, he survived stage IV breast cancer. In 2015, he was diagnosed with dementia himself and moved to Scottsdale, AZ to be close to his children and grandchildren. He passed away 6 years later.
He will be remembered as a “bigger than life” figure with a truly indominable spirit.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Richard Markson and Michael Edward (Kelly) Markson; two grandsons, Charlie Cooper Markson and Matthew Edward Markson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Marie, wife Denise and brother John L.
A private service will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Lewy Body Dementia Association (lbda.org) https://www.lbda.org/donate/
