Col. David Clark Manning, ANG, Ret.

September 26, 1928 ~ July 28, 2022 (age 93)

Col. David Clark Manning, ANG, Ret.

It is with great sadness that the family of Col. David Manning, 93, announces his passing on July 28, 2022. Dave was born on September 26, 1928 and was the only child of Reg and Ruth Manning. A native Phoenician, Dave graduated from North High School and Arizona State University before joining the Air Force and the Arizona Air National Guard.

Dave’s love of flying, which was kindled in spite of his fear of heights, started as a young kid when he stared up into the sky with fascination every time a plane flew overhead. He had inherited his father’s artistic talents and employed them to win flying lessons by designing the insignia for the Arizona Air National Guard Copperheads that is still used today.

Dave’s career flourished from the Air Force to the Arizona Air National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Colonel and became Base Commander of the 161st Air Refueling Wing. He was also an integral member of the Goldwater Squadron. Dave retired from flying in 1988 and served five more years at headquarters. Throughout his distinguished career, he won numerous medals including Meritorious Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Exceptionally Long Service Medal with four bronze stars, and Vietnam Service Medal.

Following retirement, Dave poured his considerable focus and fascination into his golf game and his grandchildren. Dave could often be found on the course with his son and grandsons or in his favorite chair watching the golf channel. His talents were endless when it came to artistry - whether he was working with wood, car parts, or drawing pencils. He could craft a solution to just about any problem and did not believe in buying the newer model of any gadget when the old one worked just fine with a little tinkering.

Dave is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Peggy, as well as his children Dr. Melanie Manning and Dr. Michael (Jennifer) Manning; and four grandchildren, McKenzie (David) Roney, Andrew Manning, Daniel Manning, and Jonathan (Samantha Onofry) Manning.

Dave’s love for his family was deep and everlasting. He had a unique and special relationship with each of his children and grandchildren and was the consummate role model. Peggy, Melanie, and Mike have many fond memories of family cross country road trips and beach vacations, where they would all pile into a car and snuggle up with their animals to make the journey with Dave at the wheel. Dave never missed an event and would often help divide and conquer so there would be a family member cheering for every grandchild, even when there was overlap. Dave attended countless baseball, soccer, football, and lacrosse games, tennis matches, dance recitals, and track meets. His consistent, infallible presence was a true honor for his grandchildren. They could always count on the sight of a big straw hat with an ASU band above the brim in the stands.

Please join us for a visitation to celebrate Dave’s life on Friday evening August 5, 2022, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ. There will be a private graveside service on Saturday morning. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to help wounded veterans at and Hospice of the Valley,
