Cynthia Sue Blumer

December 18, 1933 ~ September 21, 2022 (age 88)

Cynthia Sue Blumer, who recently celebrated her 70th wedding anniversary with H. Maynard Blumer, passed peacefully early Sept. 21, 2022. A long-time member of Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, Sue was involved in various leadership roles, study groups, and mission work, both locally and globally. Always a student, Sue retired from Arizona State University after years of serving students in the College of Public Programs and teaching in the English Department.

Sue was born in Dallas, Texas, to D. Haden Linebaugh and Lorene McCarty Linebaugh in 1933. Her mother passed when Sue was five, and Sue and her father lived with various grandparents, aunts, and uncles in Texas and Oklahoma, until Haden married Elizabeth Crockett when Sue was twelve. Sue attended Classen High School in Oklahoma City and met Maynard at Oklahoma A & M (Okla. State U.). They married Sept. 2, 1952, and Sue completed her degree in English summa cum laude at Wichita State University.

In addition to Maynard, Sue is survived by her children, Martha Blumer, Laura Blumer Balcom, and Eric Blumer, their spouses Roger Balcom and Karen Blumer, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Her last words, pointing to each family member, were, “I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love God.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arizona State University Retirees Association: “ASURA Scholarship Fund, in honor of Sue Blumer.”
