Dave Patton, 84, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2022, in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his family by his side.
Dave was born on March 1, 1938, in Orange, NJ to Margaret (Fowler) and Lloyd Patton. He was raised in Short Hills, New Jersey and graduated from Millburn High School in 1956. Dave earned his B.S. in biology from the University of Virginia before settling back in NJ to begin his life-long career in the insurance and financial planning industry. Dave built his legacy on developing authentic relationships and serving his client’s interests as he helped them plan for their future. As a testament to his commitment to his clients, he continued to serve them even after his cross-country move to Arizona in 2010.
Dave had many interests including sports, art and music. While Dave enjoyed watching any and all sports, especially the Suns, he never tired of shooting hoops and throwing a baseball with his son. He was an avid golfer until his illness forced him to quit at which time he took up the study of oil painting. Dave became quite accomplished with an affinity for western landscapes. Before his illness stole his physical ability to paint, he was able to finish a portrait of each of his grandchildren. Dave also never traveled without his camera and enjoyed getting up early, which wasn’t his normal routine, to frame beautiful scenic vistas with the perfect morning light.
Dave’s passion for music was exemplified with his percussion skills in the Millburn HS marching band and as a stand-up bass player in the orchestra. As an adult he sang for many years with a chorus associated with the Montclair Operetta Club. For the last 12 years, Dave was a valued member of the choir at St Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church in Scottsdale. He had a deep faith that meshed with his music and guided his life.
Dave was an extraordinarily kind and thoughtful man who was much loved by his family and all who knew him. He was always ready with a friendly smile, cordial debate, and took a genuine interest in friends and strangers alike. He was always generous with his time and served as a mentor to many including his nieces and nephews. In addition to his love of children, he had a special talent for befriending cats.
Dave is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances (Garthwaite) Patton and three children; Betsy Kelco (Dave), Ginger Olivieri (Anthony) and David, Jr, (Sarah). He also leaves behind three grandchildren; Jane and Sam Patton, and Sally Olivieri, and is survived by his beloved big brother, Bill Patton, nieces Cindy, Christina, and Amanda, and nephews Bill and Jake.
A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on June 4 at St. Barnabas Church, 6715 N. Mockingbird Lane, Scottsdale. Donations in his memory may be sent to Friends of Music at St. Barnabas, Hospice of the Valley or Assistance League of Phoenix.
