Obituary

Francien V. Randall, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend died peacefully on August 26, 2021, at the age of 78. She was born in Phoenix, AZ., in 1943 to Alex Varela and Carmen Andazola (Alves). As the eldest of five children, Francien was a natural born leader for her family. Francien chased her dreams in education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Social Services and Health Care Management. Francien worked at Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA., as the first woman Patient Advocate to help the Spanish speaking community understand how the hospital works to help solve problems connected with patient care. Francien was bi-lingual and at that time 45% of the patients using the outpatient services were from the Spanish surname community. The Spanish community gave her a nickname of “Panchita” as she was a community leader for the Spanish speaking population. Later in life, Francien and Wayne moved to Phoenix, AZ., and Francien worked for the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General. Francien retired and became a community activist for the Scottsdale community. Francien is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Danny Varela, ex-husband Robert Hansen, and ex-husband Dan Bermingham. Survivors include her former husband Wayne Randall, daughter Diana Sperrazza and son Dan Bermingham, four grandchildren: Rachelle (David) Firestone, Ashley (Jesse) Yang, Colton (Danielle) Bermingham and Seantel Oliver, eight great-grandchildren: Case, Rhett, Viola, Dylan, Natalie, Parker, Duke, and new baby Bodi, sisters Moriah Stafford, Kathy (Stan) Hudson, and half-brother Bill Ortiz. Francien enjoyed listening to Latin music, dancing, traveling, going to the casino, spending time with her family, shopping, watching movies and was a big Cardinals fan. She was dynamic and complex person who will be remembered for her infectious laugh, beautiful smile, and outgoing personality. While she had various health issues throughout her life, Francien’s resilience, strength, faith, and family pulled her through challenging times. Memorial services will be held on September 14, 2021, at Messinger Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. www.alzfdn.org
