John Carter Grimes Jr., known as "JJ" to some, ‘Papa Grimes’ to others, and ‘Grumpy’ to those closest to him, departed the physical world for Heaven at the age of 60 on April 25, 2022. John courageously battled stage four cancer for over seven years, beating the odds with the incredible tenacity and willpower that he was well known for. Like all the challenges in life that John faced, he never gave up.
John was born in Charleston, West Virginia on March 24, 1962; however, he has long considered Scottsdale, Arizona his home, having grown up here in town, as well as moving back in late 2020 to enjoy his retirement. John was a graduate of Arizona State and a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. John had a long and illustrious career in commercial real estate, working at Walmart, Target, and lastly Public Storage before he retired. Despite immense physical pain and symptoms from chemotherapy, John continued to work multiple years into his cancer diagnosis. John was known for his unique mix of frugality and generosity; a whiz with numbers who was always happy to help those in need, especially in Central America and Africa where he built multiple orphanages, wells, and schools to assist children in need. John’s good deeds and wholesome intentions will be carried on by the Grimes Family Foundation for years to come.
John will be remembered for his love of F1 racing, traveling, and sports, both tennis which he avidly and skillfully played, as well as exhibitions he watched on TV and attended in person. John is survived by his two Sons, Carter and Blake, his father, John Sr., and his two beloved pups, Ringo and Jax.
Services will be held on May 7th at 12:30 pm, at the Congregational Church of the Valley in Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, the Grimes family is requesting donations to the World Orphan Fund, a charity supporting children in need around the globe.
