John Toma, aged 98, died on Labor Day, an appropriate date for a man who spent 50 years as a NASA engineer. He designed a solar powered vaccine refrigeration system, and traveled around the world to villages without electricity to install the systems and to train local residents to maintain them. He is survived by his beloved companion Mary Frances Klupar, and children Robert (Christine Marsick), Nancy (Nelson) Alcalde, Jack (Margo Saikaly), and Michael (Cheryl), as well as five grandchildren. His wife Cecilia predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Hospice of the Valley Scottsdale 16117 N. 76th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Private funeral service, interment at a later date.
