Joseph Sotaro Codner, 82, of Paradise Valley, Arizona, passed away in the ICU after a long, hard-fought battle with Stage 4 colon cancer and COPD on May 2, 2022. His strength and fortitude in life, amidst all the difficulties that inevitably came his way through his 82 years with us, is truly exemplified by him triumphantly beating COVID amidst his battle with these otherwise debilitating conditions. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Cancer Research and ICU staff at Honor Health Scottsdale Shea Hospital for their devoted care and giving Joseph the chance to fight as long as he could to stay with his beloved family.
Joseph spent his childhood in Bedford, Ohio before eventually relocating to Arizona later in life. Joseph graduated from Bedford High School after an accomplished wrestling career that saw him place second in state in Ohio, in consecutive years, and earning him a wrestling scholarship to Kent State University. Both he and his childhood sweetheart and wife Lillian Codner (deceased) received their Bachelor of Arts degrees shortly thereafter. The two then made the courageous decision to leave a strong family behind in Ohio for the unknown, and hopes of prosperity, on the West coast....finally settling in Arizona. Joseph ran several successful businesses in the Phoenix metro area until worsening health caused him to retire from full-time work in 2020 when he was 80 years old. He remained a strong family man to the end who cared and put the needs of his two children and two grandchildren above all, including himself.
Joseph is predeceased by his parents Arthur and Laverne (Carmen), his wife Lillian (2000), his only two sisters Alice and June, and eight brothers William, Edwin, Carlos, Armando, Arthur,
Delano (Del), Bruce, and Noel (Stephen).
Joseph is survived by his two children, Sandra Bierman and Joseph’s always-dedicated son-in-law Robert Bierman of Scottsdale, Arizona and Michael Codner of San Diego, California, his only two grandchildren Madelyn Codner and Derek Codner of San Diego, California, and his wife Susan. He also leaves behind his remaining brother Norman and his beloved dog Reggie.
