Marilyn Ann Giovanni Schmickley began her journey on August 17, 1937, in St. Louis, MO, and ended on June 19, 2020, in Scottsdale, AZ. She was the oldest of five children born to William J. Giovanni and Flora Pertici Giovanni. She is survived by her partner of 48 years, Dennis Lee Schmickley, nine children and stepchildren, 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and countless extended family members - all of whom she loved dearly.
She had an exuberance for life. She cherished all of the memories and enjoyed the many neighbors and friends she made, wherever she lived - Webster Groves, MO, Philadelphia, PA, Mission Viejo, CA, and Scottsdale, AZ. She poured boundless passion and creative energy into her family, decorating her homes, creating a welcoming environment, delighting in gardening, exercising with a fury, and loving her partner.
Marilyn loved literature, always sharing a story. Her studies at Temple University provided great pleasure to both herself and her student colleagues; her professor noting that ‘Ms. Schmickley is in almost every way an ideal student; intelligent, perceptive, diligent, emotionally mature, uncomplaining, modest …the lady is a joy’.
She treasured her Italian heritage, capturing your attention with vivid and animated stories of the history of her family. She made multiple visits to her ancestral home, connecting with her distant relatives. She felt at home in Italy. The walls of her office are filled with photos of family - near and far - capturing those special moments she so effortlessly and wonderfully created.
She embraced life. She was vibrant, strong, intelligent and courageous. She brought light and joy to those she touched. Marilyn was a walking smile. She made a point to know your name and she always invited you into the conversation. She included everyone in her circle of love.
