Jim Horton passed away on July 9, 2021, He was 83 years old. Jim was born in Newport News, Virginia on September 10, 1937 to Oliver Horton Sr. and Ethel Larson. He attended Newport News High School where he was the president of the senior class. He continued his education at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He attended Georgetown for two years before joining the U.S. Army where he attended the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey California. After his service in the army in Italy and Germany, he returned to Georgetown University graduating in 1964 with a B.S. in Foreign Service. Jim worked on the Goldwater for president campaign and became a staff assistant to Senator Barry Goldwater from 1969-1980 in Phoenix. From 1980-1987 he returned to Washington D.C. as a legislative assistant to the Senator. After the Senator retired, Jim became a legislative assistant to Senator John McCain working on energy and water issues. He went on to become a government relations consultant to a law firm in D.C. In 2001, he moved back to Arizona where he and Anita Koppliin were married. He continued doing consulting work the the Arizona Power Authority and the Arizona Association of Conservation Districts.
Jim is survived by his wife, Anita, his two adopted sons, Kevin Horton(Carolyne) of Phoenix and Randy Horton of California, his step daughter Tracy Stull(John) of Phoenix, step grandchildren, Dana Comi (Matt) of Montgomery, Alabama and David Stull of Phoenix, his sister Nancy Wilkes(Buddy)of Panama City Beach, Florida, two nephews, Brad Pittman of Reston, Virginia and Stephen Pittman(Linda) of Raleigh, North Carolina.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 1:00pm at the Scottsdale United Methodist Church, 4140 N. Miller Rd., Scottsdale, Arizona. On lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Foundation at Scottsdale United Methodist Church of to Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, 4455 E. Lincoln, Paradise Valley, Arizona.
