Rosalinda "Sarah" Hernani Cala

November 8, 1960 ~ July 15, 2022 (age 61)

Obituary

Just like a white winged dove fluttering in a garden of flowers; Rosalinda “Sarah” Hernani Cala, sang a song that sounded like she was singing throughout her beautiful life. She flew away from this world on July 15th, 2022 at Mayo Clinic, Phoenix AZ.

She was a devout Catholic, a loving life partner, a mother, sister, aunt, and loyal friend.

Sarah was born on November 8th, 1960, in the Philippines to Engineer Jaime Cala (ret. USN) and School principal Andrea Hernani Cala.  She was the second eldest to four siblings (Ray, Rosenda (Owen), Eliza, and Joven).  At the age of seventeen she was brought to the United States by her mother, Andrea - along with her siblings where they grew up in the City of Angels - Los Angeles, California. She later called San Diego, California home. She retired in Las Vegas, Nevada to take care of her son who has a critical illness.  She spent her last days in North Phoenix waiting for her son to receive a kidney transplant from Mayo Clinic.

Sarah attended college in Los Angeles, CA where she majored in Psychology and danced ballet and contemporary jazz.  She was a problem-solver with a human touch, so being a counselor was her natural gift which she did throughout her life. She believed that to better understand people, you needed to listen to them and be able to empathize. She was always good at being able to bring out the light in dark situations and to point out what was important in life. Sarah emphasized that we should be grateful and show thankfulness for the many blessings that God has given us.  Despite the everyday nuisances that she experienced, she knew and preached, that we had to give thanks to God for providing for us.

Faith and Family was important to Sarah.  She showed this through her endless love and unwavering selfless support she provided to her children – Christopher R. Cala (Son) and Ashley A. Meuwissen (Daughter). For every great woman, there is a man at her side and for 28 years – Jonathan Hamilton was Sarah’s life partner. Their love for each other will remain eternal.  She also loved her little puppy – Colt who gave her so much joy (and sometimes a headache).  Sarah was a devout Catholic and lived her life knowing: “The Lord himself goes before you.  He will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8). She was very generous and was an avid giver to St. Jude Hospital, The Salvation Army, and ASCPA.

Sarah was the matriarch who always knew what was going on with everyone’s life. She would remind her loved ones of the small yet important details that get lost in the shuffle of daily life.

Sarah loved fresh flowers (roses and sunflowers), scenic drives, various music genres, dancing (ballet), classic literature, fashion, cooking shows, British television, Korean dramas, and some reality television. She loved burying herself in Charles Dickens novels or keeping up on fashion trends through her Vogue or Cosmopolitan magazines.  She enjoyed catching up on Korean TV shows with her daughter (Ashley) and sisters (Owen and Eliza).  With her Son (Christopher), Sarah was always excited to watch the culinary creations on BBC food channel or the latest of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Real Housewives of Beverly hills.  With her life partner, Jonathan; they planned their future of traveling across America with their dog Colt.

Sarah was a fashionista who always had a keen eye on style and beauty. Like a beautiful rose, she stepped into the world as a lovely lady.  She was a material girl in a material world where she liked to surround herself with sophistication and beauty.

Sarah followed these two rules: “Be honest to yourself, find your happiness in who you are, and always be grateful for whatever you have!” and “Always better yourself and keep moving upward in life.”

A small memorial for family members and close friends will take place at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary on Saturday July 30th, 2022.  If you would like to donate flowers in honor of Sarah, please contact Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary on Pinnacle Peak Rd in Scottsdale, AZ; or look for the donation link information on the Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary webpage.
