Shirley Kay Mayo of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on Wednesday morning, October 8, 2020 after her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mom was born in Upland, California on November 22, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Pearl Kemp and Bernard Martinez.
She was preceded in death by our father, Richard Thomas Mayo, in 1970, her mother, Pearl Kemp in 2001, her brother, Bernard Martinez Jr in 2006 and her son, Scott Mayo in 2012.
Her loving memory will be survived by 4 children; Mark Mayo, Randy Mayo, Michele Hamer and Kirk Mayo, a son-in-law and daughter-law; Tony Hamer and Debra Mayo, 5 grandchildren; Chris Mayo, Lisa Wilfong, Miranda Mayo, R.T. Mayo and Jaime Lynn, their spouses; Melanie Mayo, Stephen Wilfong, Tara Mayo and Josh Jones, 8 great-grandchildren; Makayla Mayo, Ella Mayo, Hudson Wilfong, Paxton Wilfong, Landrey Jones, Larkyn Jones, Eli Mayo, and Maverick Jones.
Mom never re-married, even during a time in American culture when it was the norm to do so when 4 children were still living at home. Instead she furthered her education and began a career in accounting and office management that lasted 40 years.
Keeping in touch with family and friends was very important to our mother, so she started a tradition of having an “Open House” every year on Christmas Eve at her home in Ontario, California. She would plan and cook to the point of exhaustion to ensure the many guests who always came were filled with food, drink and the Christmas spirit.
Her passions in life included bowling, camping at the beach, and going on many cruises with her mother and dear friends Rosemary Rockwell and Betty Glick. The tales of Shirley and Rosemary’s adventures in Las Vegas and hob knobbing with celebrities is legendary. She also devoted many years to charitable work with Laureate Beta Alpha, aka the “Twisted Sisters”
Shirley Kay Mayo will be missed by all who had good fortune to know her.
Our family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Vi at Silverstone, Ligia, John and Oma at Deer Valley Care Home and everyone at Tradition Hospice for the many years of providing invaluable care for mom.
