William John Rush

November 11, 1936 ~ November 20, 2021 (age 85)


A native of Alliance, Ohio, William Rush was born to Doris (Crider) and Searle Rush. Bill graduated from Alliance High School in 1954 and entered Ohio State University.  Before graduating from the Ohio State School of Journalism in 1958, Bill was active in campus affairs, competing on the Buckeye track team and serving as sports editor of the Ohio State Lantern.

While attending Ohio State, Bill worked at the Spectator weekly newspaper group in Columbus, as well as the Columbus Dispatch.  Early in his career Bill worked at newspapers in Connecticut and Massachusetts, before being named general manager of the Lake County (Ohio) News Herald.

Besides the News Herald, Bill held top management positions at four other Ohio newspapers.  He served as publisher of the Lorain Morning Journal, the Warren Tribune Chronicle, the Mansfield News Journal and as manager of the London Madison Press. He also was vice president/general executive of the Troy, New York Record.

In 1990, Bill was named publisher of the New Haven Register, Connecticut’s second largest daily newspaper.  In 1995, he was made a vice president of the Journal Register Company, which published 17 daily and 91 weekly newspapers throughout the east and midwest United States. 

Before his retirement in 1998, Bill was involved in New Haven, CT community affairs, serving on the boards of the New Haven Regional Leadership Council, Connecticut Public and Economic Council, Long Wharf Theater, University of New Haven, Habitat for Humanity, and Domestic Violence Services and the NAACP.

Upon retirement from his 40 year career in journalism, Bill split his time between Warren, Ohio and Scottsdale, Arizona. He enjoyed spending time with family and following his Ohio State Buckeye and Cleveland Indian sports teams.

Bill was pre-deceased by his wife of 48 years, Ruth Ann Lee, and brothers Richard and Michael Rush. He is survived by his sister Betty Rush, Alliance, OH; and his 5 children: Kayci Rush (Richard Spratt), Minneapolis, MN, Wendy (John) Zucal, New Philadelphia, OH, Nathan Rush, Scottsdale, AZ, Jenny (John) Zmarzly, Hilton Head, SC, and Molly Rush, Long Beach, NY.; 10 grandchildren: Katia (Ross) McConkey, Kloie Rush-Spratt, Zo Spratt, Caitlin Zucal, Ethan (Baili) Zucal, Madeleine Zucal, Mitchell Zmarzly, Mariel Zmarzly, Tad Zmarzly, and Lilly Zmarzly; and 2 great-grandchildren: Violet and Scarlett McConkey.

Bill will be laid to rest along side Ruth at the Memorial Garden at Saint Barnabas-On-The-Desert Episcopal Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
