John Douglas Bailey (Doug), 85, passed into the arms of Jesus on January 15, 2019 at Payson Care Center in Payson, AZ. He was born on September 9, 1933 in Elk City, Oklahoma to John and Mary Lou Bailey. At age 2 he moved to California and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1951 and San Diego State University in 1963. Doug married Cheryl Marie Eide in 1955 and shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Doug joined the Air Force in 1952 and was deployed to Germany for a year before completing his Air Force service in 1956. Doug was employed by Scripts Institute of Oceanography affiliated with the University of California as an engineer in San Diego, California and later worked for Mattel Toys and Action Instruments. He moved to Alpine, California in 1975 and he and Cheryl retired to Payson in 2004.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward W. Bailey. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, daughter, Shannon Bailey Singer (Doug) and son, David C. Bailey (Staci), 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Doug was a wonderful contributor to his community including 38 years with Kiwanis as President in both Alpine and Payson as well as Lt. Governor of the Southwest district of Kiwanis International. He attended the Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Alpine, CA where he was finance chair and worked in various fundraising activities. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus. He attended Mass faithfully throughout his life. Doug enjoyed playing golf, traveling extensively, reading a wide range of materials and watching the San Diego Chargers.
Services will be held St Phillips Catholic Church, 511 S. St Phillips St, Payson, AZ on February 2nd at 10:30 AM for Rosary and 11:00 AM for the service with a luncheon following in the fellowship hall. Interment will be at Mountain Meadows Memorial Park.
