Betty was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Edward and Lillian Hospodka. Soon after, her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she grew up with four siblings, Evelyn, Eddie, Larry, and Linda. On February 18, 1963, Betty married the love of her life, William David Shumate. They were married for 50 years. Betty was blessed with two children, Randall David and Julie Ann, and was Grammy to ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought her deep joy and pride.
In 1971, Betty received Jesus Christ as her Savior, with Dave and the kids following. In their new faith, they attended Camelback Bible Church for 40 years. Betty’s heart was her home, where she served faithfully as wife, mother, and homemaker. She also loved attending Bible study at Christown Women’s Bible Study and Community Bible Study for many years. After Dave went to be with the Lord, Betty began attending Whitton Avenue Bible Church, where she worshiped wholly and was loved deeply. Betty never knew a stranger and was a friend to all, readily sharing the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ and a relationship with Him. Knowing Jesus changed her life and gave her confidence for the next.
Betty is survived by her son Randall David Shumate and wife Julie, her daughter Julie Ann Bertram and husband Kelly, grandchildren Stephanie, Randy Jr., Joshua, Elizabeth, Jessica, Hannah, Rachel, Luke, Victoria, and Jake, great-grandchildren Noah, Leah, and Lee, and sister Evelyn Landolf.
In lieu of flowers, you are invited to give a gift to a ministry that Betty cared for. She was a generous supporter of and faithfully prayed for her granddaughter’s ministry of spreading the gospel message on college campuses.
A memorial will be held in her honor on Saturday, September 25, 11 a.m. at Whitton Avenue Bible Church, 2601 E Whitton Ave, Phoenix, AZ and will also be live-streamed (See Below)
