Joan (Chenier) Reuther

April 24, 1942 ~ June 18, 2022 (age 80)

Joan (Chenier) Reuther of Scottsdale Arizona passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022. She was 80 years old and spent the last 5 years of her life courageously coping with the advancing stages of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.  From her eternal life in Heaven, Joan will join her late husband Gene to continue to watch over their daughters Marlene Sauerbrey and Deborah Rozum, son-in-law Benjamin Rozum, and grandchildren Taylor and TJ Rozum. She loved her entire family unconditionally and cared for and supported her children and grandchildren.

Joan was born and raised in Montreal, Canada.  She was a proud alumnus of St. Helen's Boarding School in Eastern Township, Canada.  She lived for a short time in Riverside, CA then moved to Long Island, NY. Early in her career, she modeled in NYC where her beauty would grace the pages she appeared on. She then met Gene through mutual friends of the Lakeville-Manhassat Volunteer Fire Department. They were married in Long Island and were together for over 45 years. They moved to Southington, CT and lived there for over 25 years, where she was a stay-at-home mom raising her daughters, teaching them to be strong and to live a life of kindness and warm heartedness. She was also involved in her community where she was President of the Welcome Wagon. In April of 1993, she proudly became a U.S. Citizen and her patriotism and love for our country was unmatched and infectious.

During her retirement and relocation to Scottsdale, AZ, she resided in Terravita Country Club. She took on her role as grandmother enthusiastically and with open arms. She spent every minute she could to be with Taylor and TJ in their infant and toddler years, and beyond. She was actively involved in their lives as the best grandmother they could've ever asked for. Joan was lovingly given the name of "Precious" by her grandchildren as she truly was a precious part of their childhood. She adored her church community and was an active parishioner at Christ Church Anglican in Phoenix where she was part of the New Member Welcome Committee and Flower Guild.

Joan lived her life to the fullest and loved to dance from her childhood all the way through her last years. She had the opportunity to travel the world extensively on memorable trips with family and friends.  She toured Europe, Russia, the Hawaiian Islands, Bermuda, cruised the Greek Isles, safaried in South Africa, and spent time down-under in Australia and New Zealand.  Among the many places she visited, her fondest memories were of time spent in England, Scotland, and Ireland touring her family roots and enjoying the splendor of the old-world and the nobility of the Royal Family.

Throughout her life and in the communities that she was part of, Joan made so many life-long friendships and she left lasting impressions on the people she touched.  She was kindhearted, compassionate, caring, funny, and was undoubtedly a good friend and an amazing woman. Her presence will be greatly missed, but her memory will be everlasting for everyone who was fortunate enough to have her be part of their lives, even if it was only in a small way.

A memorial service and celebration of Joan's life will be held at Christ Church Anglican, located at 5811 N. 20th St, Phoenix, AZ 85016 on June 28, 2022, at 10:30 am. Reception to follow. She will be laid to rest at Hansen Desert Hills Memorial Park, in Scottsdale, AZ. Joan's family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate Scottsdale caregivers at Silverado Memory Care Community and Hospice of the Valley. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Joan's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
