It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Karen Frances Leonard McCarty, age 39, mourn her passing on September 10th, 2020 in Tempe, Arizona. Karen was born May 11th, 1981 and raised in Massapequa, New York until moving to Tempe, Arizona in 1995.
Karen will be lovingly remembered by her parents, Brian and Susan Leonard. Brother, B.J. Leonard. Sister, Gayle Halter and husband Mike, along with their daughters, Anna and Gracie and ex-husband Bryan McCarty. Karen was also Godparent to her best friend Lisa Robb’s son Maddox. Karen leaves behind family in New York as well. Aunt, Eileen Leonard, cousins, Patty, Barbara and John. Godmother, Barbara Heffert and cousins, Denise, Michael and Robert. And her little roommates, cats, Ilean and Stanley. Karen is preceded in death by her Uncle John Leonard and Godfather, Uncle Harry Heffert earlier this year.
It is simply impossible to list all the lives that Karen touched. Her kind, gentle soul lit up a room as soon as she entered. Her selflessness showed in every area of her life, always putting the needs of others before her own, lifting everyone up around her. Everyone who knew Karen has a story of her generosity and love. Karen loved to travel and had many adventures throughout her life. Traveling to Rome, Italy visiting the Vatican, the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain. Another highlight of her life was traveling to Paris France, visiting the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. Karen always loved the beach and Hawaii was one of her favorite places on Earth. Karen was a devoted Aunt to her nieces, Anna and Gracie and Godson Maddox. She loved spending time with them, never missing a special occasion and always going out of her way to spend time with them sharing her kind, loving spirit. Karen’s sense of humor was unmatched. Somehow she could find humor in any situation and bring a smile to anyone’s face, even in the darkest of times. A perfect example of her kindness and sense of humor is her little roommate, her cat Ilean. Karen found her at a shelter, a three legged, slightly homely in appearance cat. Karen took her under her wing giving her the name Ilean and they have been besties ever since. Karen found happiness and peace this year shining brighter than she had in years, even kidding and laughing that 2020 was her year. The world will never be the same without Karen’s love, light and joy filled smile.
